Creative Paws Obedience Training

With Trainer Ashlee Trotter

Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter, BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavioral problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State Unviersity. Prior to pursuing her dog training interests she honed her skills of positive reinforcement training while working with zoo animals at facilities in the Midwest. She has been recognized for several years as a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) by the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers, an affiliate organization of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the first organization to offer a national standard for trainer certification. She is also a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator for the American Kennel Club.

Ashlee's dog, Spirit, has earned the distinction of being the second dog of his breed to earn the American Kennel Club's (AKC) Master Agility Champoin title. He is also the AKC's #1 ranked German Wirehaired Pointer in agility for both 2008 and 2009, and the highest pointsearning agility dog of his breed of all time. They placed 6th overall after 5 rounds of competition in the 2008 AKC Agility Invitational competing with the top 5 dogs of each AKC recognized breed. They also placed 6th overall at the 2010 AKC Agility Nationals. Spirit is the only German Wireharied Pointer to reach the finals of a national agility event, as he has achieved this honor twice.

Ashlee and her staff use positive reinforcement training methods to improve the relationship between dog and handler by providing an effective means of communication and understanding as the foundation for learning. Training your dog should be enjoyaboe for both you and your dog!

Class Descriptions

Puppy

The purpose of Puppy Class is to provide a positive environment for socialization of puppies to a wide variety of people as well as each other. Early socialization (done before the puppy is 18 weeks old) has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both  human directed  aggression and dog-dog aggression. Socialization will also reduce the likelihood of anxiety and fear based behavioral problems. Additionally the common puppy issues of house training, mouthing, leadership, and preventing  behavioral problems will also be discussed. Puppies will also learn to sit and begin recall training (coming when called). This class is appropriate for puppies ages 2-4 months old at the start of the class. All dogs must have received at least 2 rounds of vaccines prior to attending class. If your dog has not yet received the second round of vaccines at the start of the session, please do not bring him/her to class. Instead, plan to attend class(es) without your puppy until the second round of vaccines has been administered. Children training dogs must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. No retractable leashes allowed!

Obedience 101

Obedience 101 teaches the basics of obedience: sit, down, stand, recall (coming when called), stay and heel - everything your companion dog needs to know! Both verbal commands and hand signals will be used. Dogs of any age may take this class. Positive reinforcement techniques will be used, so please bring food rewards or a small toy with you to class. Children training dogs must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. No retractable leases allowed!

Obedience 102

Obedience 102 is focused on honing the skills of Obedience 101. Additional levels of difficulty and distractions will be added. Dogs of any age may enroll provided they have a basic knowledge of basic obedience commands: sit, down, recall (coming when called), stay and heel. Children training dogs must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. No retractable leashes allowed!

Rally

Rally is a fun spin on traditional obedience for both the dog and the handler. Rally is a sport in which ALL dogs are encouraged to participate. Purebred or mixed breed, every dog can learn the fundamentals for Rally. Dogs must have strong heeling skills to take this course. In Rally an enthusiastic attitude and wagging tail are as important as precision. In fact, handlers are not only allowed to, but encouraged to positively reinforce their dogs during the competition with verbal praise, petting, and even food rewards! Dogs and handlers should both appear to be enjoying  the work and each others company. Children training dogs must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. No retractable leashes!

Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) class covers the 10 aspects of the AKC CGC test, the only AKC certificate available to all dogs - pure and mixed breeds. The CGC program is designed to encourage dog owners to train their dogs to be Canine Good Citizens and includes the following:

Accepting a friendly stranger

Walking on a loose lead

Sitting politely for petting

Allowing basic grooming procedures

Walking through a crowd

Sitting and lying down on command/staying in place

Coming when called

Reacting appropriately to another dog

Reacting appropriately to distractions

Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner

The CGC test is administered on the last night of class. Children training dogs must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. Dogs must wear a flat buckle collar for the test, no training collars, head halters or body harnesses are permitted during the test. No retractable leashes allowed!

Silly Pet Tricks to Clicker Training

This class will introduce handlers to clicker training which can be used for trick training or training any other behavior that the handler would like. We will cover simple tricks such as shake, hi-five, wave, beg, and rollover. Additional tricks will be discussed upon request. Children training dogs must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. No retractable leases allowed!
