Preventative
Care
Physical Exam: to ensure
the health of your pet
Vaccinations:Vaccine schedules
are determined on an individual basis. Appropriate vaccines
are affected by age, life sytle, travel, and immune
status
Heartworm Testing: recommended
yearly. Even the drug companies admit that no drug is 100 %
effective. The chance of your pet contracting heartworm
while on medication is very small. However the risk is ther.
If your pet is on a heartworm medication purchased at our
clinic, and they contract heartworm disease, the drug manufacturer
will pay all costs associated with treatment. Heartworm is a
devistating disease and by yearly testing we can catch an
infection early, before permanent injury to your pet's heart
and lungs.
Parasite Control: The Center
for Disease Control recommend yearly testing and/or yearly
deworming to prevent human exposure and infection. There are
numerous incidents of humans contracting canine and feline
parasites. We recommend a yearly fecal check.
Diagnostic
Services
Physical
Exam: When your pet is ill, a simple exam may help us
determine the problem quickly. If the problem is not
obvious, March Animal Hospital has state of the art
equipment and experienced doctors to delineate the cause of
the illness.
X-ray Equipment: Modern digital x-ray
equipment to produce excellent quality films aids in the diagnosis
of many types of problems.
In-house Laboratory: Blood
chemistries as well as complete blood counts can be done in house
to quickly determine the seriousness of your pet's
problem.
Outside
Laboratory: March Animal Hospital uses an outside lab
capable of providing numerous types of other testing that cannot be
done in house. This includes bacterial cultures and antibiotic
sensitivity, thyroid testing, biopsies, and other specialized
testing
EKG: In house EKG is used for
screening and monitoring during surgery. CardioPet provides expert
Veterinary Cardiologists to evaluate the EKG and recommend further
diagnostics and treatment regimes
Cardiac Monitoring: All
patients under any form of anesthesia are placed on a
PulseOximeter. This piece of equipment monitors heart rate as well
oxygenation levels in the blood. The alarms on this machine warn us
if there is any problems with our patients. This gives us the
ability to correct the problem before it becomes life
threatening.
Blood Pressure Monitoring: High
or low blood pressure can be as serious to our friends as it is to
us. We monitor our surgical patients and any other patient that we
are concerned about. Geriatric screening is recommended after the
age of 8 years old.
Tonopen: Brand new instrument used to screen
all cases involving the eyes for Glaucoma. March Animal Hospital
recommends all pets over the age of 10 get a yearly
screening.
Dental
Care
Routine cleaning and polishing: Unlike humans
most animals need to be under general anesthesia in order to
perform a thorough evalutation as well as cleaning and polishing
the teeth. Our new Dental'aire Machine allows us to perform a
thorough cleaning and polishing in the shortest time possible. This
makes the dental safe for our furry friends, because anesthetic
time is kept to a minimum.
Extractions: We believe that the veterinary
patient needs to retain as many teeth as possible. However if the
tooth is beyond saving due to exposed nerve roots, severe
gingivitis and gum recession, or a severely damaged tooth,
extraction is the only solution. While more sofisticated procedures
are available through a Veterniary Dentist, these can be cost
prohibative.
Preventive Programs : Preventing dental disease at home is the best way to
ensure your pet will have healthy gums and teeth through out their
life. Brushing daily is the most effective way to clean away plaque
and tarter. MAH recommend enzymatic tooth paste and a specifically
designed tooth brush. If brusing is impossible there are numerous
other items available in the market. These include dental bones,
rawhides impregnated with dental enzymes, special diets and oral
rinses.
